Delta State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to accept the outcome of the Governorship Election in the state and congratulate the PDP Governorship Candidate, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori who is already coasting home to victory.
The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu made the call in a statement on Monday in Asaba.
He said contrary to the wrongful assertion by the APC, the Delta State Governorship and House of Assembly elections followed due process and was conducted in consonance with relevant laws chiefly among is the Electoral Act 2022 as amended.
The results duly collated from the various units, wards and local government areas have so far been adjudged as free, fair, credible and transparent and winners have been emerging across the State Constituencies.
It is however disturbing that the APC that unleashed terror on innocent voters in Ughelli North and parts of Ethiope west could turn around to point accusing fingers at others
So far, 23 local government areas have been duly collated and the PDP won in 19 LGAs while the APC won in 4 LGAs.
The APC having won 6 State Constituencies cannot turn around to describe the election as non complying with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 as amended.
We thank Deltans for their unalloyed support and solidarity with the PDP even as we promised to continue delivering on the Okowa mandate till the last day of this administration.
We therefore call on the APC Governorship Candidate and Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to do the needful expected of democrats and call on his brother, the PDP Governorship Candidate, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori to congratulate him on his well deserved victory at the polls.

Okowa congratulates Oborevwori, thanks Deltans
Delta Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has expressed gratitude to people in the state for using their ballots to give Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, victory in Saturday’s governorship election.
The governor, at a Thanksgiving Service at Government House Chapel in Asaba, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oborevwori as governor-elect on Monday, attributed the party’s victory to God’s grace.
Okowa charged the governor-elect and his deputy, Chief Monday Onyeme, to put God first in all activities, and assured them that they would record successes if they governed with the fear of God.
He disclosed that the presidential and governorship elections brought forth new lessons for him, and promised to offer the best of advice to the in-coming administration in the state.
“Today is a glorious day in the sight of God because of what we went through since Saturday, March 18. We thank God for leading us to victory.
“I thank all Deltans who have been out there campaigning for us, the PDP. I thank all of you for coming to rejoice with the governor-elect, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and the deputy governor-elect, Sir Monday Onyeme.
“So, l thank you all for coming. As you go back home, remember to continue to give thanks to God for what He has done in our lives and in our state.
“We have come here to dance and to sing praises to God for what He has done in our lives. I thank all our leaders, our women and all our youth for working so hard towards the victory of our party (PDP).
“My greatest joy today is that l am sure that this altar of God will stay alive” Okowa said.
To House of Assembly members-elect, leadership of the PDP and other stakeholders, he called on them to rally round Oborevwori to enable him achieve set goals.
While commending Deltans for their support in the last eight years, he promised to remain committed to doing more till his last day in office as governor.
“As l thank you all, l must also thank Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan for the roles he played in uniting aggrieved members of the party in the build-up to the elections.
“In these last two weeks, God has taught me a lot of lessons and it is my prayer that you (the governor-elect) will not make some of the mistakes that we made,” he added.
To those that defected before and during the electoral contest, he wished them well, emphasizing that he held no grudge against anyone.
Congratulating the governor-elect and his deputy, the governor urged them to relate more with the people at the grassroots, even as he implored them to trust in the Lord for He alone would endow them with what they need to succeed.
He also urged Deltans to work with the governor-elect and his deputy so as to sustain the tempo of sustainable socio-economic and infrastructural growth and development in the state.
In an interview, the governor-elect, said he was overwhelmed by the support of Deltans at the polls, and promised to justify the confidence reposed in him.
Dignitaries at the special thanksgiving service were Wife of the Governor, Dame Edith Okowa; former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan; the governor-elect, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori and his wife, Tobore; his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, among others.
Oborevwori’s victory will enhance sustainable development in Delta – Aniagwu
Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu on Tuesday said that the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori would further sustain the development trajectory in the state.
Speaking at a news conference in Asaba, Aniagwu said the party and the state government were grateful to Deltans for their overwhelming support which culminated in Oborevwori’s victory.
According to him, Oborevwori would continue with ongoing programmes and policy of the Okowa administration while also introducing its own programmes.
“The Governor and the Governor-Elect and indeed the PDP are all grateful to Deltans for this show of love and for the appreciation of the sterling performance of the administration of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the street credibility of Sheriff Oborevwori and the fact that PDP is in the DNA of Deltans.
“What has happened in this election is that Deltans have been able to repel surgically the incursion into our political DNA. As an administration and the incoming administration will not take this for granted.
“We are happy that we won fair and square in all the Senatorial Districts and that we got overwhelming support of Deltans and those who live here with us in the Northern, Southern and Central Senatorial Districts.
“This victory will spur the PDP to not only sustain the development trajectory that has characterised the Okowa led administration but to embark on a process that will indeed bring more development just like the Agenda of Sheriff Oborevwori.
“A good number of the programmes that the Okowa led administration pursued will be sustained even as new programmes and policies will also be brought on board for the purpose of reaching out to our people,” he said.
He said the administration and the party have learnt lessons in the course of the electioneering campaign and the election proper and promised to make amends for the good of the people.
“We have learnt lessons in the course of this electioneering period, we have seen the need to further connect with our people in the rural communities, to further empower our youths, and by providing more laudable projects for the people and pursuing a more united Delta agenda.
“We congratulate our opponents for putting up a strong fight and we urge them to join hands with Sheriff Oborevwori and Monday Onyeme to leave a Delta that is more developed and united than it is now.
“We have as an administration done quite some laudable projects across the state and we can beat our chest that we will be leaving the state on May 29 far far better than we met it.
“We are quite convinced that Sheriff Oborevwori is capable of sustaining these development trajectory and pushing forward a Delta that is far more developed in the nearest future,”
The Information Commissioner further said “the electioneering period have come and gone, although a victor has emerged but for us there is no vanquished.
“We believe that with the support of our brothers who contested with us we can put behind us the bitter experiences that characterised the campaign, the mudslinging that came majorly from the opposition APC and let’s move together in unity to develop our state.
“As an administration we have forgiven those who cast aspersions at us and those who lied by way of propaganda by projecting stories that were at variance with reality.
“Those we may have also offended in the course of the campaign we also plead with them to forgive us and take it as part of the election campaign.
“We appreciate all Deltans for the way they came out to vote and we also appreciate INEC for a better outing than we had in the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections.”
On the visit of the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA, Chief Great Ogboru to Government House, Aniagwu described it as laudable and worthy trait from a committee democrat.
“Chief Great Ogboru is a democrat and what he demonstrated yesterday is what was expected of democrats globally.
“Yesterday he was in the Government House because they told him Sheriff Oborevwori was in the Government House. So he came there to congratulate him and wish him well.
“We must commend Ogboru for displaying this very rare trait of a democrat and we are also calling on Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to do same by congratulating Oborevwori so that the state can move forward,” Aniagwu added.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege rejects INEC’s declaration of Oborevwori as winner of Delta poll
A while ago, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Delta State announced Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, gubernatorial flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor-elect following the March 18 governorship election.
The declaration was made despite the myriad of infractions and acts of impunity on the part of the PDP in the course of the election. These were brought to the attention of INEC with incontrovertible proof.
The March 18 election was characterized by massive fraud, unprecedented vote buying and voter suppression perpetrated by the PDP in the course of the election.
The fraudulent nature of PDP’s so-called victory are just too damning and daring for it to be acceptable in any decent society. Most of those infractions are on the public domain and known to INEC officials and the security agencies involved in superintending the election.
In the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections, the results pointed to an unequivocal rejection of the PDP. Of the three senatorial zones in the state, APC won two while PDP controversially edged out the Labour Party in the Delta North Senate race.
It was an unadulterated verdict of Deltans on how they have fared under 24 years of governance of their state by PDP.
On the basis of the factors listed and more that will come later, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, governorship candidate of the APC in Delta State as well as the leadership of the party, unequivocally reject the declaration by INEC of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori of the PDP as winner of the March 18 governorship election.
We will challenge this fraudulent result using all legal means.
As a democrat and Deputy President of the Senate, Omo-Agege will explore all lawful avenues to reclaim the mandate freely given to him by the good people of Delta State.
To the numerous supporters of APC and the entire public that share in Omo-Agege’s vision of building a new Delta State, we urge you all to remain calm, peaceful and law abiding.
I can assure all our teeming supporters and all Deltans that the PDP pyrrhic celebration of a stolen mandate will be short-lived.
By the grace of God and the clearly expressed wish of the people, this electoral heist will be reversed and Senator Omo-Agege will be sworn in on May 29, 2023 as the lawfully elected Governor of Delta State.

Press Release: Aniagwu’s claim proves PDP’s interference in Delta’s governorship poll
The Commissioner for Information in Delta State, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, earlier in the afternoon of Sunday, March 19, 2023, claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 23 of the 25 local government areas in the state.
Speaking on Arise TV, he unwittingly proved what the people of Delta State had already known, that PDP acted with unbridled impunity in Saturday’s gubernatorial election and distorted the people’s will.
At the time Aniagwu made the claim, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced the results of only five local government areas with those of 20 being awaited.
In effect, the Delta State PDP had actually manipulated the election for it to make such a claim. At the time INEC began announcing the results, that of Udu LGA had already been released with APC winning with a wide margin.
Aniagwu laced his claim with wild allegations that the APC’s flagbearer, was delaying the results from some local government areas. How can that be?
Nothing can be further from the truth. It is a classical case of falsely labelling an opponent with the crimes already committed by the accusers, the PDP.
We are aware that Dr. Festus Okubor, Director of Strategy in the Okowa Government, was inside the INEC office without a valid reason other than to interfer and rig results in favour of the PDP. When confronted by the army commander, he continued to introduce himself as the brother-in-law of Chief of Defense Staff, on whose authority he claimed he was at the collation Centre but was asked to go out by a gallant Army Commander who was in the INEC premises on his official duty. Similarly, Mr Hilary Ibegbulem, Principal Staff Officer, was also walked out of the coalition centre. We also know that in Ika North East, BVAS boxes were found without BVAS machines inside. We are also aware that Ifeanyi Eboigbe, Okowa’s Director of Protocol, carted away BVAS machines from Ika South and returned two hours later with them. Even Mr . Charles Aniagwu Commissioner of Information was stopped with an INEC official in his car. When confronted by security agents, he tried to lie that he was helping the official do an errand. The Army returned with both of them to the INEC office and found out the staff was sent nowhere but only sneaking the said official to where they were writing the election results. It will seem, and as is clear, Governor Okowa had moved his office into INEC in order to manipulate the results of Ika North East and South in favour of the PDP. This would explain their confidence in saying they had won an election that was still in process
Aniagwu’s claim on PDP’s electoral success at a time INEC is yet to announce the results not only gives insight into the party’s underhand deals to manipulate the results but is clearly in breach of the Electoral Act.
In the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections, PDP lost woefully with a score that reflected Deltans’ true disdain and dissatisfaction with the disastrous governance of the party. The party embarked on flagrant vote buying and voter suppression to illegally retain its hold on the Government House using Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s stooge, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
The attention of INEC and the security agencies is hereby drawn to the criminal acts of PDP, contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Act as amended. We urge INEC to critically evaluate the polls and unravel the numerous incidents of vote buying, voter suppression, and outright manipulation of the results.
To the good people of Delta State who are feeling distraught by the manipulation of their votes by the PDP, we urge them to remain calm and peaceful as the leadership of the APC is alert to the situation and will ensure that their votes truly count.

DELTA APC REJECTS GUBERNATORIAL POLL RESULTS **SAYS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS THROWN STATE INTO MOURNING
The Delta All Progressives Congress, APC, Campaign Council has rejected the result of the Delta state gubernatorial election held on March 18, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
In a statement, Director, Communications and Media Strategy of the council, Olorogun Ima Niboro, dismissed the result declared by INEC as a pyrrhic victory for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which will be overturned by the sheer weight of evidence against it.
“We have an entire arsenal of evidence showing the disenfranchisement of the people, non use of, and tampering with BVAS machines, declaring double results at polling units, issuing of fake result sheets to agents and uploading cooked up results into the BVAS.
“We also have evidence of widespread vote suppression, voter intimidation, thuggery and violence against our supporters. The PDP was at its worst during the election: wickedly denying the people of their will freely expressed at the polls.
“Look at the streets of Delta today. It is gloom everywhere. Our people are wearing long, mournful faces. No sign of jubilation anywhere. Our streets would have been throbbing with life, song and dance, were this the will of the people. This rape of the will of the people will not stand. It must not be allowed to stand!
“We call on our party faithful and supporters to remain calm. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy cometh in the morning.

PDP TO APC, INEC: STOP STOKING CRISIS, DECLARE OUR CANDIDATES, GOV. FINTIRI, DAVID OMBUGADU AND ISA ASHIRU WINNERS OF THE GOVERNPORSHIP ELECTIONS IN ADAMAWA, NASARAWA AND KADUNA NOW
Text of a Press Conference by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, on the conduct of the March 18, 2023 Governorship and Houses of Assembly elections, today Monday March 20, 2023 at the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja.
Gentlemen of the Press, as you are aware, Governorship and State Assembly elections held across the country on Saturday March 18, 2023.
From the results obtained by our Party and Independent Observers directly from the Polling Units, the PDP recorded sweeping victory in most of the States where the elections held.
Sadly, the announced results are not reflecting voter choices. Once more, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has failed the integrity test. Its officials have connived with chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)and security agents to swindle the PDP out of its deserving electoral victories.
Of particular note is the brazen plot by the APC and INEC to alter the results of the Adamawa State Governorship election already won by the PDP Candidate, Gov. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, and give undeserving victory to the candidate of the APC. This is unacceptable. It is the rape of democracy, a frustration of the popular will. We will not accept such a travesty of justice.
The same scenario has already played out in Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kebbi and Sokoto states, among others. In all these states, the illegal use of security agents to tip electoral victories in favour of the much-discredited APC was massive. We invite the INEC National Chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu to immediately do the needful.
The ongoing brazen attempt to alter the electoral outcome in Adamawa state is particularly shocking. In spite of the manipulations i.e. switching, doctoring and altering of figures by the APC and INEC, after the final tabulation, our Candidate still defeated the APC candidate with over 35,000 clear and undisputable votes. But INEC is hellbent on denying the PDP victory.
The PDP cautions INEC not to invest in chaos by engaging in this nefarious act. We remind INEC that the people of Adamawa State already have the results of the election from all the Polling Units in the State. They are aware that the PDP candidate won with about 35,000 votes; and as such, they will never accept any fictitious electoral outcomes generated from INEC’s offices in Abuja.
The people of Adamawa State have spoken loudly and clearly in re-electing Governor Fintiri. They are already agitating over the unwarranted delay by INEC in announcing him winner in line with the results obtained from the Polling Units. We say to INEC: Don’t invest in anarchy.
Respect the popular will. Announce the already known winner of the Adamawa governorship election, Ahmadu Fintiri. Anything to the contrary will never be accepted.
Thank you and God bless Nigeria.

Dr. Iyorchia Ayu

Akeredolu Mourns Ex-Ekiti Deputy Gov, Bisi Egbeyemi
Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON received the news of the death of former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, with utter sadness.
The Governor said the demise of the former Deputy Governor is a huge loss to the progressive family, Ekiti State and the country at large.
He is personally touched and feels the sense of a great loss. Aside his political bond with the late Egbeyemi whom he fondly referred to as ABA, the Governor recalls their shared communality and brotherliness in their days at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State prior to their venture into politics.
Governor Akeredolu described the late Egbeyemi as a stabilizer and loyal politician who made remarkable contributions to the development of his state.
He commiserated with Egbeyemi’s immediate family, the government and people of Ekiti State and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Governor said:”Baba Egbeyemi was a dependable politician. He was a peaceful man who excelled as a Deputy Governor. He served meritoriously and gave his all to the service of his state.
“An elder statesman whose fatherly role and wise counseling would be missed by all in the progressives family. He will be long remembered for his immeasurable services to the people.
“ABA was a gentleman par excellence. In his lifetime, he demonstrated a high level of dignity and patriotism while in office.
“His passage prods remarkably nostalgic moments. Although he was much older, I used to address him simply as Bisi during our days in the University. He never made age an issue between us. It was until we left the University and I realised he was far older than me that I started calling him ABA, which he duly deserved. He was a man of extreme humility.
“Although, death is inevitable. The reality of Baba Egbeyemi’s passage hurts the heart. But we take solace in the quality life he lived. He served without blemish.”
The Governor prayed God to grant the deceased peaceful rest and comfort his children and the entire family in this moment of grief and loss.

ELECTIONS ARE OVER: HEALING PROCESS MUST BEGIN, SAYS PRESIDENT-ELECT BOLA TINUBU
With the conclusion of the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, I congratulate all the elected governors and assembly members for earning the mandate of the people. The March 18 governorship election held across 28 states and the state legislative poll across the 36 states of the federation have brought the 2023 election circle to a fitting close.
I must praise President Muhammadu Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, Observer Groups, Civil Society Organisations, development partners and the electorate for the success of the elections. The election is pivotal to the growth and sustenance of democracy and democratic governance at the state level.
Consolidating democratic governance at the sub-national level will bring more development and improved quality of life to the masses. The more we entrench and consolidate the gains of our democratic venture across the length and breadth of our country, the more our people benefit in terms of dividends of democracy and good governance.
However, I’m saddened by the reported isolated infractions during the elections and its aftermath in some states. I strongly condemn it. Also, the report of arson after the announcement of governorship results in one state did not represent who we truly are: peace-loving people.
The physical and verbal assaults committed are unacceptable and antithetical to democratic ethos.
Elections should be a celebration of our maturing democracy and freedom of choice and ought not to be moments of grief. I am particularly pained by cases of ethnic slurs, which are capable of creating needless mis-characterisation reported in some locations.
My appeal is for us to rise above our differences, which, in reality, are fewer than the valued strings that bind us together as a people irrespective of the circumstances of our births.
As former governor of Lagos State, I can attest to the strength in our diversity and togetherness. As your President-elect, it is that spirit of inclusiveness we engendered in Lagos that I intend to bring into national governance so that together we can attain our full potentials.
I will give priority to expanding the civic space and safeguarding citizens’ freedom to exercise their rights within the bounds of the law.
Indeed, the elections are over. The people have voted to elect their governors and state legislators that will serve them for the next four years. The time for leadership and governance is now upon us.
In a democracy, majority would have their way but that majority must not suppress the minority from having their say. As democrats, we have to safeguard free expression. Winners must be magnanimous and those who did not win should have a large heart for tolerance and respect for the greater interest of the nation.
As the elected, the only way to justify the trust and confidence of the people and the mandate entrusted in us is to commit ourselves to the service of the people. We must all work diligently and sincerely to make life better for the masses. As elected officers, we have no other assignment than to be burden-bearers for the masses and ensure they have better life that we promised during the campaigns.
We must take urgent steps to unite the people; those who voted for us and those who did not. We must champion the healing process by embracing the opponents and their supporters. As I have stated previously, the time for politicking is gone. This is time for nation building, a task beyond one individual or a section of the society. We need every hand from wherever it may come to be on deck.
I am ready to work with you all as your President. I will be a worthy partner you can trust and rely on as we all bond together, in unity of purpose and renewed hope for, the betterment of our blessed country and beloved people.

PRESIDENT BUHARI WISHES MUSLIMS HAPPY RAMADAN
President Muhammadu Buhari sends greetings and best wishes to Muslims as they commence 30 days of Ramadan fasting, urging that they use the season “to project the best and finest virtues of Islam by personal conduct, and not precept.”
In a goodwill message to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, President Buhari says “let us use this opportunity to put the best teachings of Islam into practice, such as kindness and the love of humanity.”
According to the President, “this is an occasion for deep reflection and greater fear of Allah and avoidance of all evils that harm humanity.”
He said that “the Ramadan is characterised by abstention from food and drinks from dawn to dusk, which brings both the rich and poor to share the experience of hunger together, thereby strengthening the bonds between haves and have-nots.”
President Buhari explained that “as we begin these 30 days fasting season, let us not forget that Ramadan is not only about abstention from eating and drinking, but it is a reminder to refrain from all kinds of evil and transgressions that harm humanity.”
“I am particularly aware of the activities of traders who artificially increase the prices of their goods, including food at the beginning of every month of Ramadan. This kind of exploitation is against the spirit of the Ramadan and the spirit of Islam,” the President said.
President Buhari added that, “while we are observing this important occasion in the spiritual life of Muslims, let us share food and drinks with the less fortunate, because by sharing our blessings with others, Allah will multiply our rewards for good deeds.”

The Governor gave the assurance on Tuesday while speaking to journalists at Oyingbo in Lagos after an inspection tour of the ongoing Red Line Rail project and vehicular overpass bridges at Yaba and Oyingbo train stations.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was accompanied on the tour by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Managing Director of the Lagos Area Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Abimbola Akinajo and some cabinet members said his administration is on track towards delivering the dividends of democracy to Lagosians, irrespective of the ethnic or religious divide they belong to.
During the inspection, Governor Sanwo-Olu was welcomed by an elated crowd at the Yaba and Oyingbo train stations, where commercial activities were ongoing peacefully.
Lagos residents in the area came out in large numbers to congratulate the Governor on his recent electoral victory and also expressed their appreciation for developmental projects in different parts of the State.
While expressing satisfaction with the progress and level of work on the Red Line Rail, which is in its first phase is from Oyingbo to Agbado, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the State Government will intensify efforts to educate and enlighten traders along the Right of Way of the Red Line Rail of the dangers of staying there.
He said the project at different stages of completion has five Vehicular Overpass Bridges, including Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin to Onipanu, and Ikeja, to forestall train-vehicle accidents and reduce travel time for Lagosians.
“We believe we are still on track. We believe it should be ready before the end of our first term depending on when we want to commission it. We will be doing a lot of testing, and signalization because these road tracks will also be working with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, operating a train from Ebute-Meta in Lagos to Ibadan. We need to be able to harmonize a lot of signalization between our rail infrastructure and the Nigerian Railway Corporation rail infrastructure.
“All the vehicular overpass bridges are very important because of the unfortunate train and bus accident that we saw a few weeks ago at Shogunle. So all these bridges we are building, apart from the fact that they are full vehicular bridges, are also to stop trains, vehicles, and passengers needing to interact. The highest grade of ensuring that you completely remove any contact with rail is when you build a complete alternative mode of transportation for passengers, pedestrians, and vehicles,” he said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu told journalists that the early resumption of work immediately after the 2023 elections was to fulfill the ‘more work’ promise during the campaign to deliver the ‘Lagos Project.’
He expressed delight with the peaceful coexistence among various ethnic nationals living in Lagos State, especially in Yaba and Oyingbo, where there are many commercial activities.
“I came out today for us to get to work. Campaigns and elections in our view are over, we need to continue to serve our citizens. We still have about 67 days to go in our first term. So, we have to ensure that everything we need to do to be able to finish the first tenure is done. For us, the election is behind us. It is work that we have promised Lagosians that we are back to do. As a peaceful individual, I am committed to more peaceful co-existence among all Lagosians.
“We want to tell the people who are still carrying politics of bitterness that they should see the bigger picture and join us in meeting the aspiration of Lagosians, which is to provide an economic opportunity for them to make this place peaceful and continue to provide that economic space for them to be able to earn a living and be a better citizen for themselves and their family,” he said.

PRESIDENT BUHARI INAUGURATES GAME CHANGING NATIONAL COUNTERTERRORISM CENTRE, NEW ONSA BUILDING
Ø HIGHLIGHTS GAINS OF ADMINISTRATION IN IMPROVING NATIONAL SECURITY IN 8 YEARS
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja inaugurated the new Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and National Counterterrorism Centre (NCTC), two state-of-the-art facilities to optimize efforts at addressing evolving security challenges in the country, especially terrorism and violent extremism.
Speaking at the inauguration of the two world-class facilities, the President said it would serve as a major legacy to provide the incoming administration with infrastructure to effectively coordinate national security and counterterrorism efforts.
The President also used the occasion to outline significant milestones achieved by his administration on National Security, including gains in combating terrorism, armed banditry, kidnapping, separatist tendencies, crude oil theft, piracy as well as militancy in the South-South and cyber-security.
On the threat of terrorism, which was labelled as a major security challenge facing the country when he assumed office in 2015, the President said:
”I can confidently state here today that we have achieved significant milestones in degrading the major threat and restoring normalcy to most of the hitherto securitized areas in the North East.
”These areas previously occupied by terrorists have been freed and Internally Displaced Persons are voluntarily returning to their homes.
”This was largely achieved through the valiant efforts of our Armed Forces and other security agencies, in collaboration with our regional and international partners but above all, the support and cooperation of the Nigerian citizens.”
Apart from the degraded threat of terrorism in the North East, President Buhari also expressed delight that government has curbed the series of armed banditry and kidnapping cases in the North West and North Central zones.
He noted that these criminal acts had emerged as a result of the scattering of Boko Haram in the North East and the implosion of Libya in the Maghreb.
On separatist agitations, the President noted that agitators in the South East and to a much lesser extent the South West, who have been experiencing concerns of separatist tendencies, are being checkmated.
”Meanwhile, issues of crude oil theft, sea robbery, piracy and militancy in the South-South are equally being addressed.
”Most of these threats have transnational linkages thereby reinforcing the need for regional and international cooperation as critical enablers to enhance our national security,” he said.
On maritime security, President Buhari expressed delight that some key threats within Nigeria’s Maritime Environment such as piracy, sea robbery, crude oil theft as well as illegal unregulated and unreported fishing are being effectively tackled.
He said between August 2018 and March 2023, over 220 vessels involved in maritime criminality within Nigeria’s Exclusive Economic Zone, up to the Republic of Togo, had been prosecuted.
He commended the Falcon Eye maritime domain awareness project, domiciled with the Nigerian Navy and coordinated by ONSA, for providing high-quality real-time intelligence, leading to the arrest and prosecution of economic saboteurs.
He added that over 87 oil tankers involved in various crude oil and product theft have been arrested, the theft of over 3 million barrels of crude oil was prevented and 15 million litres of petrol and diesel recovered.
”Recent commendations from the International Maritime Organization, European Union and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to Nigeria on our efforts in reducing maritime criminality in the Gulf of Guinea and successful prosecution of pirates in the region are worth mentioning,” he said.
On cyber threats, the President underscored the importance of protecting Nigeria’s cyberspace from all forms of intrusion.
To this end, he said in addition to receiving regular briefing from the Cybercrime Advisory Council, the government had established the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team and revised the National Cyber Security Policy and Strategy in February 2021.
”To further complement these efforts, I will soon be endorsing the Presidential Order for the Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure. This is bearing in mind that cyberspace creates a nexus for synchronizing efforts of our security and law enforcement agencies towards addressing numerous security challenges,” he said.
On the newly inaugurated top grade facilities, President Buhari described the secure and hi-tech offices as a demonstration of his administration’s firm commitment to ensure national security capabilities are kept abreast with the highest global standards.
He said the offices are designed to enhance strategic response to a broad range of current and emerging security concerns, noting that Nigeria exists in an interconnected world and therefore must be able to face and respond to both domestic and global security challenges.
Congratulating the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retired) and his team for this noble achievement, the President expressed confidence that the new facilities would in no small measure enhance the desired peaceful and secure environment for our country.
He also commended some of the key security policy documents either produced or revised by this administration and supervised by ONSA including the National Counterterrorism Strategy 2016, National Security Strategy 2019, National Cyber Security Policy and Strategy 2021 and the National Crisis Management Doctrine 2022.
”In broad terms, these policy documents emphasize a Whole-of-Government involving all the ministries, departments and agencies in combination with a Whole-of-Society involving civil society organizations and the citizenry.
”Thereby we can achieve a Whole-of-Nation, and ultimately a Whole-of-Region approach involving our contiguous neighbours, ECOWAS and AU partners in order to address various dimensions of security concerns.”
In his address of welcome, Monguno said the dynamic nature of global and domestic security environment necessitated the modification and expansion of some of the functions of ONSA.
He said while ONSA’s core mandate is to assess the security concerns of the country and advise the president on all matters bordering on national security, the changing nature of the security landscape over the last three decades in the country and across the world led to the broadening of ONSA’s mandate to accommodate the needs of emerging security threats.
”The new office for the NCTC is designed to accommodate the additional workforce and improved technological capabilities of the Centre, particularly the Exclusive Devices Analysis Office (EDAO) , increasing activities of countering violent extremism department and joint terrorism analysis branch.
”The new ONSA and NCTC complex boasts of office spaces, a world-class hall, conference rooms, team rooms, laboratories, an auditorium and an operations/crisis centre,” he said.
According to the NSA, the facilities would further enhance Nigeria’s already recognized contribution to global counterterrorism policy and practice efforts and give impetus to the country’s internal, bilateral, and multilateral cooperation and collaboration in tackling the menace of terrorism and violent extremism.
He commended President Buhari for his administration’s investment strategy in legacy infrastructure projects and also acknowledged the support of the National Assembly.
In his goodwill message, the UN Resident Coordinator for Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, commended President Buhari and his government for championing the NCTC, saying ”this is no doubt part of your legacy that will enable Nigeria continue to address domestic and regional security challenges”.
Schmale, who was represented by Kimaris Toogood, Peace and Advisor, Office of the Resident Coordinator (UN Nigeria), also commended the progress made by the Nigerian military to degrade the operational capacity of Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram and to improve intelligence gathering on suspected terrorists.
The top UN official in Nigeria praised ONSA for the development of threat assessments and watchlists, active cooperation with Interpol, establishment of multiagency screening processes, the trials of multiple terrorist suspects, and the development of Federal and State rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
”We all know that it takes both kinetic and non-kinetic responses to end terrorism. The fact that almost 80,000 persons have surrendered to authorities in the north-east since May 2021 represents a real opportunity to shift the dynamic.
”Challenges remain in terms of screening and identification of those individuals and ensuring appropriate responses in line with their needs and profiles. Some persons are no doubt deserving of and desperate for humanitarian assistance.
”And likewise, individuals will need to be accountable for their crimes and justice will need to be served.
”The UN stands willing and ready to support the Government of Nigeria on this effort, and commends Governor Babagana Zulum for developing the Borno Model and engaging with the UN on this matter, ” he said.
Schmale pledged that UN would continue to be a strong partner and supporter of Nigeria’s efforts to address the issues of insecurity and terrorism.
He recalled that since 2001, the Security Council has adopted more than 40 counter-terrorism resolutions.
”As outlined in these resolutions, Member States are obliged to implement significant measures at the national level while also enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation to counter and eradicate terrorism.
”As part of a whole of government effort these include criminalizing terrorist acts and prosecuting offenders, countering the financing of terrorism, enhancing border security, countering incitement to terrorism and addressing the root causes.
”The visit of the Members of the UN Security Council to Nigeria and the passage of Resolution 2349 of 31st March 2017 are the strongest demonstrations yet of the United Nations commitment to supporting Nigeria’s counter terrorism efforts,” the UN official said.
He stressed that the newly commissioned NCTC would effectively contribute to advancing implementation of these various Security Council resolutions and is thus a positive step towards Nigeria fulfilling its obligations under international law.
